La histeroscopía es un estudio que se realiza con fines diagnósticos y terapéuticos, el cual permite visualizar el canal del cuello uterino y el interior del útero.

Este procedimiento permite un fácil acceso al interior del útero y se puede realizar tanto en el consultorio como en el quirófano, con anestesia local o sin ningún tipo de anestesia. Los procedimientos de histeroscopía quirúrgica más invasivos se pueden realizar, con anestesia local, regional o general, en una sala de cirugía.

Las complicaciones pueden ser mínimas o mayores; dentro de las complicaciones mínimas, la paciente puede presentar molestias abdominales bajas, pero generalmente no presenta síntomas. Se produce un sangrado discreto, de acuerdo al procedimiento realizado, menor que el de una regla normal.
Las complicaciones graves tienen una incidencia menor de 1%, es decir, de 200 procedimientos, uno se complica con perforaciones uterinas, desgarro del cuello uterino, infecciones y lesiones eléctricas a causa del electrobisturí o complicaciones graves secundarias a los medios de distensión, en el caso del CO2, hipercapnia y arritmia y, en el caso de los fluidos hipoosmolares, hemodilución.
